CSW67 Side Event - A World We Women and Girls Want: Technology enabled Social and Economic Advancement

Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, in partnership with All India Women’s Education Fund Association (AIWEFA), a prominent Indian NGO in the field of women empowerment, organized a virtual high-level panel discussion, “A World We Women and Girls Want: Technology enabled Social and Economic Advancement” on 9 March 2023.
 
The event was organized on the margins of the 67th session of the Commission on Status of Women. The priority theme of the session is “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.
 
H.E. Ms. Smriti Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development, delivered the Keynote Address. Other eminent panelists were H.E. Ms. Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, H.E. Ms. Ilana Victorya Seid, Permanent Representative of Palau, H.E. Inga Rhonda King, Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and Grenadines, H.E. Ms. Anna Karin Eneström, Permanent Representative of Sweden and Ms. Anita Bhatia, Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director of U.N. Women. Ms. Rita Menon, President AIWEFA, moderated the event.
 
Ambassador Kamboj highlighted the impacts of the numerous citizen-centric digital initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to support girls in STEM and to enable access for women to finance, credit, technology and employment. She underlined that globally women constitute 36.2% of enrolment in the field of STEM but in India, it is almost equal to that of men.
 
Ambassador Kamboj emphasized the actions taken by the Government of India to enhance gender digital literacy and to encourage women and girls in technological fields such as WEST (Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology), Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA), Government e-Marketplace (GEM) and Mahila e-Haat.
 
The panel discussion was organized as a part of the ‘India Roundtables' at the United Nations. The roundtables, being organized to commemorate India@75, will showcase India’s achievements in various areas of development, including women empowerment, financial inclusion, social development, climate action and many more.
