PR’s Message

I am honoured to assume office as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, the more so at a time when India celebrates the 75th anniversary of its independence.

As one of the founding members of the United Nations, India’s contributions have been etched in the annals of the history of this Organization. Countless men and women from India have contributed to making this Organization what it is today. This can be seen in fields as diverse as promoting gender equality to addressing climate change, from peacekeeping to being the voice of the developing world. As the Permanent Representative of India, it is my privilege to take this rich history forward, and work towards fitting in India’s own major national priorities in the global and international realm, into the multilateral system.

As all of you are aware, India is en route to completing its tenure in the Security Council, the eighth time it has been elected to do so. Our priorities in the Security Council have had a clear focus on issues of direct relevance to the international community, including international terrorism, peacekeeping, stepping up on ensuring international peace and security, sensitivity to developing country issues, especially Africa and small states, reformed multilateralism and furthering the agenda on women and human-centric development. While continuing this endeavour in the direction intended by the national leadership of India, we will also keep pushing forcefully for reforms within the UN system.

Finally, as the Representative of India, I am open to your thoughts and suggestions on further deepening our engagement at the United Nations.

(Ruchira Kamboj)
